To celebrate the creativity of Maine's next generation of writers, Governor John E. Baldacci created the Young Writers of the Year Award in 2004. Sponsored by the Maine Community College System with support from the Portland Press Herald/ Maine Sunday Telegram, MaineToday.com and U.S. Cellular, the award recognizes young writers throughout Maine by encouraging and showcasing excellence in writing by high school juniors.

The Maine Community College System, Maine Sunday Telegram and MaineToday.com will showcase the writings of those high school juniors whose submissions achieve semi-finalist status. Three winners will be chosen from among the semi-finalists by a panel of distinguished judges: Maine authors Richard Russo, Linda Greenlaw and Wesley McNair. The winners will be announced in May 2008 at a recognition ceremony. Each winner will receive the Governor’s designation as a “2008 Young Writer of the Year” and $2,500 in cash.
